Hidassie Primary School

Hidassie is located on the outskirts of Bahir Dar where mostly resource poor people from developed built up areas around downtown Bahir Dar are relocated. The area having been not very populated until the relocation of the current residents, there are no schools within a 45 minute walking distance from home.  This project is not only a response to a long-standing demand for access from parents, but also for a high-quality education through Partners’ holistic approach.

To ensure an improved quality of education, the project is planning to run two shifts, as in many other public schools.  Hidassie Primary School’s enrolling capacity can reach 1,200 students (50 students/class in 12 classrooms in 2 shifts). Access to preschool and Prek-8 closer to home will enable children to use the time they would otherwise spend walking to the nearest school for studying and assisting their parents in household chores. Access to their labor after school hours will encourage parents to send their children to school, and keep them there.  Parents will also be encouraged to send their preschooler children who couldn’t even have tried to trek the long distance to the nearest school.

The project will also include a special needs program. It is designed to increase access to, participation, and progression of children with special educational needs by making the school’s facilities more accessible and more conducive to their learning, and by creating a more friendly school environment that promotes better relationships between and among children with special needs and other students and teachers.
