SPECIAL NEEDS EDUCATION

To date we have special needs classes in 11 of our primary schools. Students who are visually and hearing impaired, as well as those intellectually challenged, continue in these classes until they are ready to transition into mainstream classes in grade 5. Teachers are trained in special needs eduction through our teacher training program. Various learning tools and resources for these classes have been provided by specific donation from ISEE-urk, and the Kalamalka Rotary Club. Intellectually challenged students receive support to acquire life and vocational skills, such as basket weaving, which prepare them for becoming productive members of society. Our programs also promote increasing community awareness of disabilities and the benefits of inclusive education through school visits from parents and other community members.
